Paper template digitalization to DXF

Templates Canon Eos 250D to DXF

How to convert paper templates into digital templates?

In leather, textile, or upholstery production, traditional paper templates are still widely used – handcrafted patterns that serve as the basis for precise material cutting. However, these physical templates become a limitation when trying to integrate them into modern, digital production workflows.

In the past, digitization was usually done by digitizing boards. These required users to manually mark each point on the template using a special cursor. The process was time-consuming, prone to human error, and restricted by the physical size of the board. Today, when every minute in production counts and flexibility is critical, such methods are simply no longer efficient.

Fast, precise and efficient solution: PhotoTrace Lite

PhotoTrace Lite by MiriSys Software s.r.o is a modern solution based on converting bitmap images into vector lines to work with in specialized CAD/CAM systems. This software is capable of scanning multiple templates at the same time which leads to time and cost savings and improves efficiency of production. All you need is standard DSLR Canon camera which provides high quality images to scan maximum of template details like curve points, corner points, notches, holes, etc. More informations can be found here.

How PhotoTrace Lite works?

  1. Lay the templates on a contrasting background.
  2. Use the camera to take one or more photos.
  3. The software automatically detects contours, corner and curve points, notches, holes, and other technical elements.
  4. The output is a vector file in DXF format, ready for immediate use in any CAD/CAM software.

A key advantage is that multiple pieces can be digitized in a single photo session, dramatically speeding up the process. And unlike digitizing boards, there is no limitation to the scanning area dimensions so every customer can adapt the setup to his needs, not the other way around.

Why Switch to Digital Templates?

  • Speed – Digitization takes minutes
  • Accuracy – No manual tracing or guesswork with curves
  • Space-saving – Replace shelves of paper templates with a digital library
  • Data security – Easily back up and archive your patterns
  • Instant usability – DXF files are ready for nesting, design, and cutting

Seamless Integration with Other Systems

PhotoTrace Lite doesn’t stop at DXF export. Thanks to close integration with other MiriSys Software products, such as the modern UniPDS construction system, you can immediately start working with your digitized patterns – edit shapes, add technical features, nest them onto material layouts, or send them directly to CNC cutting machines. The result is a streamlined, automated workflow – from photo of the template to the final cut.
